Favourite cake!!

My favourite cake - Jamaican Chocolate Banana Rum Cake from NYDC. NYDC has the best delicious cakes so far that I have tried. Starbucks and Coffee Bean cakes are way too pricey and not good enough. This cake has three layers - the chocolate at the top, the second layer - the banana which takes up more than two-thirds and lastly, the rum which has a nice finish to the whole taste. Though, NYDC cakes are a little pricier but it is definitely worth the money to try it...

Woah, last night I watched Blades of Glory starring Jon Heder and Will Farrell. I must say that I really didn’t expect myself to laugh so hard at the parodies and jokes that are being shown. Staying out late with your friends and watching a late night movie can be tough on your social night life, esp if you need a cup of hazelnut latte to keep u awake for hours…

Anyway, back to the show, the synopsis is like this: Trouble occurs when they got into a fight when they were tied for the gold. As a result, both of them were stripped of their titles and disbarred from competing again. However, a loophole in the ruling regulations enables them to compete again as a team in the doubles event – the first male-male team. First of all, I never expected to laugh my socks off at the movie as I thought the movie is boring. The ice-skating scenes were awesome and yet hilarious to watch. The chemistry and interaction between the two co-stars are funny as their characters argue to each other. The spoofs that Will Farrell did as a macho muscular ice-skating champion complement with the spoofs that Jon Heder did as a effeminate ice-skating champion. The way they carry as each other as they practice and synchronise their ice-skating routine was hilarious and funny to watch. The whole cinema crowd laugh like crazy, not to mentioned the deadly Iron Lotus stunt...you have to see it to believe...

New show I am waiting to watch - Fantastic Four and the Rise of Silver Surfer...cool CGI graphics and lotsa action to watch. Like the CGI animation for the Silver Surfer is way cooler than I have seen...also Jessica Alba as Invisible Woman...Hot!

Tried out this new coffee chain at Vivocity - Pacific Coffee. Ordered the tall Hazelnut Latte and the taste is not bad. Quite expensive around the price range of Starbucks which will entice me to buy another round next time. However, the ambience is cool for relaxtion as there are nice comfortable sofas and swings for you to chill out with friends. Cold drinks like Cookies and Cream Chillino are refreshing, however kinda similar to Starbucks Frappacino drinks.

French

Now, exams are over and I am supposed to look for a part-time job. However, I decided to take up learning another new language.

J’apprends Français. Je parle un pur français.

I have immersed myself in the French culture over the past week and must say that it is a lovely subject to learn. I think that it’s easier to learn than Spanish as most of the English words originate from French.

Il y a des monuments célèbre de la France, e.g le musée du Louvre, la tour Eiffel , le château de Versailles, la cathédrale Notre Dame etc…

J’aime French !

I hope someday in the future that I will have the opportunity to go to France and live or work there. I like to use my knowledge of French language to talk to people on the streets, order things…and immersed myself in the culture…

Au revoir

The beginning of an end

Alas, we have the book covers for the last Harry Potter book....feels kinda depressing after reading Harry Potter for almost 6yrs. I started to get hooked on the books during 2000 when my friend recommended it to me. At first, I thought that Harry Potter was the name of the author of the book rather than the title! Also, I admit that I was like those pple who initially thought that the books were promoting witchcraft and occult. But then, once I started reading it, all I realised that those initial reactions that I have were all poppycock or b**s*****!! The books are not promoting witchcraft, rather they are promoting the values of love, sacrifices and the choices that we make. I liked the quote form Prof Dumbledore who said that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow up to be. Also, he continued that the choices that we made determine who we are, rather than our personal background.

I will be waiting in anticipation for July 21st for the new book to arrive. For now, I still can't decide who version to buy - the American or the British

American Idol!!

Kelly Clarkson won 2 Grammys last year. Carrie Underwood won 2 Grammys this year. Clay Aiken has the highest selling album for his 'Measure of a Man'. Fantasia Barrino has Grammy nominations. Chris Daughtry has the no 1 selling album and lastly, Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar!! What do these people have in common? Why, they are AI alumni!!

American Idol has become a stepping stone or a beginning of a huge career for those finalists. Yes, some of them did not win the coveted Idol trophy, however, they have achieved further success and earn their success in their own right. Americans may not vote for them during the Idol competition, however it's not the end of the road for them. The losers have no 1 selling albums, no 1 single hits, an Oscar to show for their achievement.

Now, the final 12 has been chosen by America. One has fallen last night, Brandon Rogers, has the lowest number of votes and been eliminated. Throughout the competition, he has not performed to his best of his ability. His audition was good that made Simon think that he will advance far in the competition. However, he has not produced the spectacular performance that he has done during the auditions. Good Luck to him...

As for the remaining contestants, the girls are performing way beyond better than the guys. My fav female contestants are Lakisha Jones and Melinda Dolittle with Jordin Sparks growing on me. As for the fav male contestants, I liked Blake Lewis and Chris Richardson...Chris Sleigh's performance is alright but his humour didn't feel right with me. However, they are all below par from the female contestants.

Lastly, one of my fav performances from the movie 'Dreamgirls'. Jennifer Hudson truly deserved her Oscar. Her getting an Oscar is like payback to her American Idol competition as she deserved to win the Idol. Too bad, America didn't vote for her and she was eliminated. Now, three years later, she has acted in her first movie role in 'Dreamgirls' and critics praised her performance. Her role as Effie White was truly amazing. She managed to capture the essence of her character, her mannerisms, her character's stubbornness. She has shine along side with Beyonce Knowles and Jamie Fox in her role and didn't even overdo it. Her performance in this video clip was probably the best and the climax of the movie which probably got her an Oscar. As for her acting, she can further improve it so that she could be a seasoned actress as well as a singer. Compare with Lakisha Jones' performance, I really dunno who to choose....both of them were phenomenal in their performance. I hoped that Lakisha Jones would go far in the competition and not lose like Jennifer Hudson when she was on the Idol. She really deserved to win this...

Monatge of friends

As the theme song of 'Friends' was playing through my head, I decided to do a montage of my friends from different walks of my life. Thus, began my journey with my new Nokia N73 which by the way is a damn cool handphone with a 3.2 megapixel cam, I have been taking photos of my friends randomly at different places...

Armed with a collection of photos, I used Adobe Photoshop and managed to come up with a beautiful montage of my friends and I together at different places, hanging and chilling out...I guess these are the memories that you will treasure them for the rest of your lives...

Steamboat!!

After one day of Lunar New Year visiting our relatives, my sister generously decided to treat my family to a steamboat dinner at Liang Seah Street (near Bugis Junction). The little eatery offers authentic Chongqing steamboat style which I may not really familiar with. Though I went to Taiwan to eat their mala steamboat there, this Chongqing style is quite different. However at first when I went there, I thought that the food was quite lousy and expensive as it has few varieties to choose from. However, I was totally wrong. There is a split pot which you can order - one side is rich chicken broth soup and the other side is the herba mala or hot spicy soup. The mala soup comes in three degrees of spicyness so be careful what you choose.

Like mentioned, there are 40 food dipping items to choose from, quite little from my opinion. However, what they lacked in quantity, they make up in quality of the food items. The prawns are very fresh and juicy. The meat fillets are finely sliced and marinated to give a good flavour of the meat. There are authentic Chongqing food like handmade wonton, dumplings and noodles.

Overall, a definitely must eat. It is quite reasonably price for the freshness of the food and its service. More-over, the place is air-conditioned so you wouldn't perspire much when you drink the hot spicy mala soup.

Chinese New Year

On Chinese New Year Eve, our family always have our spring cleaning before we have our reunion dinner. I dunno why but our family always procrastinate until the last min to clean up our house. Then we became so rushed as everything is done at the last min, we became easily frustrated and snap at each other over tiny issues...however, once everything was cleaned up and we settled down to eat our reunion dinner, every bad grudges and arguments that we had with each other simply fades as we enjoy each other's company...weird ah? Every year, our family resolves to do our spring cleaning early but we always procrastinate and do it one the eve instead...

At the stroke of midnight on Sunday morning, Chinese New Year has finally come upon us...there's chinese goodies like pineapple tarts to consume, bak Gwa to chew and most importantly, ang pows (red packets) to collect from relatives. Am I too old to collect ang pows this year since I reached my 21st b'day? Apparently, I am only who thought so. My relatives gave me ang pows like nobody's business even though I am of legal age. Guess so long as you are not married, you will receive ang pows from them. After all, what's not to like money? If people gave u money for good luck, just graciously accept and thank them...who knows? you may need it in the future...

Happy New Year!

Valentine's Day

Is Love truly overrated these days? How many of us say ‘I love you’ and really mean it?

During this time of the year at Valentine’s Day, there will be many couples holding hands with bouquets of flowers from their loved ones, strolling down the beach or the street, gazing at each other’s eyes, thinking that they have found their perfect guy or girl. However, once their honeymoon period or their romantic gestures start to slowly fade, they will find that their love for each other wills also fade with due time.

Love has become temporary instead of long-lasting. They is no such thing as true love or ‘love and cherish you till the end of my life’ vows that they take during marriage. I am a cynic and skeptic of true love. Is there true Love? Do we really believe that there is someone somewhere waiting for us to be loved? In this modern past-paced lifestyle that we live in, it is hard to find love that is long-lasting, couples who are still happily married after 20, 30 years and beyond. Heck, it is even hard to find couples who are married for more than 5 years.

Nowadays, divorce has become the norm for the society and the number of divorces have been spiking like crazy. Look at celebrities’ lifestyle; they have made divorce a fashion statement. It has become a norm when someone has been married and divorce for a few times. Also, co-habiting has become the norm between couples who refused to commit their love legally. And same sex couples who want to commit their love, it is illegal to get married. Has the sanctity of Marriage becomes eroded that some couples divorce after their vows and some couples can’t get married due to gender issues. Is it wrong and cynical to say that Love doesn’t exist?

Afterlife

How many of us actually wonder what happens to us when we die? What actually happened to our souls once our body failed us? Is there truly a heaven or a place to go to that our religion has been promising us?

These thoughts came through our minds as my friends and I were discussing our post-life situation after Earth. Since, nobody has actually go to heaven and gave us a review of the supposedly wonderful place, I actually wonder whether if it exists at all. If it doesn’t exists, then what is the purpose of our live on Earth? Every religion promises us a place to go to if we do good deeds to one another and have faith. However, ever wonder if we are wrong? What then happens to our life here?

Similarly, some people are atheist, refusing to believe that there is God or someone with a higher power. Or some people are free-thinkers, refusing to commit to one particular religion due to their own personal fears or reasons. What if these people are right all along? That there is no God and every religion was a lie? That what we have believed for the past years has been all a hoax?

I think that everyone needs something to believe in, someone to have faith on, and someone that they can trust and counted upon. Though, some people may not place their trust and faith on religion and God, they may placed their trust and faith elsewhere, be it Science or their family. Yes, everyone needs something to believe in, especially during their darkest times of their life. Also, I believe somewhere deep down in each of us, we believe that there is a better place than Earth, a place where there are no disasters, no wars, no diseases and where everyone is at peace. Yes, everyone wants to believe that there is a better place to go, a place where their lives will be better, a place where their deeds on Earth will be rewarded, a place where they truly belong or else what we are doing now on Earth will become meaningless…

The Return of Lost

After three whole long months, Lost TV show is finally back!! Damn, I really missed the show since it went hiatus. This time, the show will be shown consecutively for the whole three months without any repeats. The last 6 episodes of the current season were good. Though there were mixed critics reviews for the current season, I must say that I really enjoyed them. The first episode where they showed the bird-eye view of the plane crashing was the best scene ever.

Though there were mixed critics reviews for the current season, I must say that I really enjoyed them. The first episode where they showed the bird-eye view of the plane crashing was the best scene ever. Another great scene was the end of the 6th episode where Jack (Matthew Fox) had Ben on the operating table and holding him hostage to demand his friends’ freedom…Matthew Fox’s acting had improved over the three seasons…there’s no denying him an Emmy nomination come in Sep….Also, the new character, Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell), whose motives were unclear, had really got me rooted and glued to her.

One peeve that I had was that I was kinda upset like the rest of the fans where they killed off an important character during the 6 episodes. The character was well-loved and didn't really deserved to die in my opinion...

Other than that, I can’t wait for the new season to come…welcome back…

Freaky Weather

There had been much recent freak weather in the world lately, floods happening in Malaysia and Indonesia, Spring coming earlier in Europe. Also, in New York, for the first time, winter is clearing fast. Soon, there will be a heatwave coming during Summer. Scientists are speculating that Earth is getting warmer. They predicted that by 2010:

  • Temperatures will rise by 1.8 deg C to 4 deg C
  • Sea levels will rise by 18cm to 59cm

Who’s at fault? The scientists said that human activity is a 66% possibility which contributed to the effects of global warming. Soon, sea levels will rise, coastline will change and islands will disappear forever.

Something must be done now. It’s now time for us to play a part to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and reduce our greenhouse gases emissions. With our present efforts to combat global warming, we can hope that they are enough to prevent the aftermath of another Hurricane Katrina or Asian Tsunami. If not, we must try to increase our efforts or we will be truly doomed in the future…

such pessimism...

But, amid the darkness of the clouds, there will always be light - a hope that we can do what is right rather than what we like...a hope that we can reduce the damages that we have already done to the environment...

Harry Potter comes out!!

Woah!! The latest and final book of Harry Potter will be out on this July!! I can't wait for this book. It will be bittersweet to say final goodbye to Harry Potter since I read the first book. Harry Potter is the new generation of fantasy books to many youths like Lord of the Rings is to the many youths after the WWII.

Food

Food - that one thing that we have too much and yet not properly distributed in the world When I go to school to eat those delicious set meals that you can see below, I can’t help but feel a slight tinge of pity for those folks who are facing poverty and unable to eat a decent meal. Also, I read an article recently on the newspaper that the employees at Google were treated free to gourmet meals just to discourage them for going to cafeteria for lunch and encourage to increase their productivity by staying at their cubicle (not sure if it works). This led me to think that sometimes food is overrated. We have chefs cooking up gourmet meals and food critics tasting and giving their opinions for a living. And yet, halfway around the world, there are people in Africa who are starving and yet cannot afford to eat a roll of bread. This makes me kinda feel guilty even time I eat those gourmet dishes below. I guess the only thing I alleviate my guilt a little is not to waste any food and throw them into the bin.

Saba Udon - One of newly acquired favourite dish. I never expected the fish to be so fresh and succulent. The fish is soft and tender...

Seafood Spaghetti - Another great dish where you can find plenty of squids, prawns and fish and even mussel...the spaghetti is baked so that the cheese is evenly spread out.

Chicken Bento Set - Looks ok and appetising, however taste ordinary and my friend doesn't like the rice...too cold

Chicken chop - Nope, this dish doesn't come with fries, instead it comes with baked potatoes. The potatoes are quite good. However, my friend thinks that the chicken is undercooked (urgh!)...oh the rice is not included in this dish...he stole it from somewhere...lol

Dead Dad Club

Guess I am now officially a member of this club after watching a recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy. During the episode where George O’Malley had to pull the plug on his father after realizing that he would no be able to wake up from his operation, Christina had to remorsefully comfort him by apologising to him that she was sorry that he had to join the Dead Dad Club. The episode ended with George saying, “I just can’t imagine existing in a world where my dad doesn’t.”

After watching the recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy, I really agreed with him totally with his emotions of helplessness and shared his sentiments. During the show, there were many moments that touched my heart, making me close to tears because the content of the episode related to me personally. It is different when our parents died. Before they died, we always took them for granted. We stretched our hands to ask our dads for money when we are broke. We looked to our mothers for help when our clothes needed sewing or washing. We cried in our parents’ arms when we lost a relationship with our friends or loved ones. We shouted at our parents when our demands are not met or when they grounded us. However, once they are gone from this place, we will truly realized how much they are missed and wondered to ourselves how are we going to live our life without their guidance.

Miss you always…

School's In

Hols out, School’s back…sobs…well, every good thing must come to an end. It’s is the start of my second semester in the uni. So far, what’s the experience like in the NTU? Honestly, I must say, S’pore universities are quite boring and tame compared to overseas. The building with its excellent sports facilities etc are there yet the students seems to be scattered around, going together in their clicks, refusing to participate in games or activities. There is no sense of university spirit or camaraderie that overseas universities have. Also, where is the sense of the student’s political beliefs? How come no one seems to stand up for their beliefs? Or even organize a protest or demonstration? Maybe I guess it’s illegal to have one in S’pore. Overseas universities have more sense of liberal and freedom. Students there are encouraged to experiment and find out more about themselves. They are encouraged to speak up, be heard, make a statement, fight for some cause that they believe in. You can have a student protest on the grounds against pollution or even against the university policies. Here, even a mention of the word protest is like a vulgarity word which may be punished with a jail term. In NTU, everything seems to be moving in a monotone manner. Go for lectures, eat your lunch, go for tutorials, mingle with your click of friends, go for your activities or sports that you take part in, or simply go home. Even the students staying in the dorm dun even have the desire to take part in their inter-hall games and activities…it seems that the place has a lot of students and yet the spirit of NTU seems so lifeless…

On another note, Apple Inc released their long, long anticipated iPhone yesterday! Personally, I like it as the iPhone has the capabilities of an iMac, iPod and wireless surfing all together in one package. The only downer: high cost and lousy naming. For a well designed and attractive looking phone that Apple managed to design, surely they can come out with a better name than iPhone?? Imagine iPod was called iMP3 players or iPlayer? (Shudders) Please make a new name and coined a new generation of phones with that new name. iPhone – what a lack of originality…no wonder they are getting sued…lol

Happy New Year

It’s a New Year!! Whoopee!! The old has passed and make way for the new. At New Year Eve before the stroke of midnight, we make our resolutions for the New Year coming and thank our lucky stars for the blessings we had. As each one of us makes a list of the things we want to accomplish in the New Year, let us also take a moment for those who had left us in one way or another. We make new friendships, lost our loved ones, forgive our enemies and broke up with others all during the past yr. As the New Year progress, I hope that I will be able to follow my dreams and accomplish things that I couldn’t dream of.

New Year Resolution

For the New Year, my new resolution would be to be more decisive and be able to make decisions for myself. The past yr, I always obliged to say ‘yes’ to people when they asked for help. Often, I could not help them in the best way possible and end up being blamed for it. Or I am unable to make decisions for myself when there are two or more possible choices for fear that I could be losing out. I need to learn to be decisive and know when to say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ when the need arises. I guess it boils down to my time in army when I couldn’t say ‘No’ often to my superiors, causing me to be afraid to say ‘No’.

Movies to look forward in 2007

2007 is the year when big blockbuster movies come to our big screen. Click on the title for the link to the trailers

5. Fantastic Four 2: Rise of Silver Surfer
The Fantastic Four gang is back together with a new character, Silver Surfer. Is he a foe or an ally?

4. Shrek 3
The third sequel with the orge and Princess Fiona, together with the Donkey and Puss in Boots.

3. Evan Almighty
The sequel to Bruce Almighty. Nope, it doesn’t star Jim Carrey or Jennifer Aniston. However, it stars Steve Carrell, one of the funniest comedians to watch. His character is Evan and God talks to him, telling him to build an ark like Noah’s Ark in the Bible.

2. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The fifth installment of the Harry Potter series…Lord Voldemort’s battle with Albus Dumbledore…cool graphics effect to look out for

1. Spider-Man 3
The last(perhaps?) installment of Spider-Man comics when Spider-Man faces not one, not two but three foes…Sandman, Venom and Hob Goblin will be the villains for this movie.

TV shows to look forward in 2007

5. The Dance Floor - New Reality show in S'pore where contestants have to dance their way to win $50,000. Should be interesting to watch.

4. Heroes - Series returning in Mid-Jan. So far, the storyline doesn't disappoint. More people with powers are discovered and another hero dies...

3. American Idol - Watch new contestants sing before Simon Cowell and hear his snippy, caustic remarks...such a joy to watch...lol

2. The Office - Love the show still. Watch Michael Scott do cringe-embarrassing things...all in a day at the office...

1. Lost - Series returning in Mid-Feb. So far Echo died, more mystery will be unraveled and a castaway might be gone...

So that’s all for this first post of the New Year. Also, by now the new title of the last installment of the Harry Potter series had been released titled “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. I guess I would look most forward to this last release of the book which hopefully would be released by this year (Jul perhaps?)

I wish everyone the best in this year. Make a commitment to yourself to go out and discover more about yourself that you hadn’t known, live life as you want to and not what others want of you, and most importantly, never don't hold back.

Happy New Year. Have Fun\
